Claremont vs Mayfield: Wider, Easier Care and £1,073 Less

If you have been looking at the Richmond Mayfield sideboard, you may also be weighing up other large, round-ended sideboards with a stone-effect top. One option we sell is the Claremont 200cm sideboard by YS Interiors.

To be clear from the start: these are two different products from two different brands. The Mayfield is made by Richmond Interiors. Our Claremont is a YS Interiors piece and is not made by, or affiliated with, Richmond (Richmond also has its own, separate Claremont range). The two sideboards share a soft, rounded silhouette and a brown wood body with a marble-look top, but they differ in size, materials, door design and price. This guide sets out those differences so you can decide which suits your room.

The Claremont sideboard at a glance

The Claremont is a long, low sideboard with three flat dark-brown oak veneer doors set between rounded ends, finished with a full-length ceramic top in a marble effect with brown and cream veining. The top's curved edges follow the shape of the body, and the cabinet sits on two slim panel feet set in from the ends, giving it a lighter, raised look despite its 2-metre length. The oak veneer shows a visible natural grain, so each piece has subtle variation.

At 200cm wide, it suits rooms where you want a single statement piece along a long wall – an open-plan dining area, a large living room or a generous hallway – with plenty of surface for lamps, artwork and serving dishes. It arrives fully assembled, so it is ready to use once it is in place.

The practical differences

Size and proportion

The Claremont is 20cm wider, 2cm shallower and 2cm lower than the Mayfield. That extra width gives more surface and storage along a long wall, while the slightly slimmer depth helps in walkways. If your wall or alcove is under about 2.2m, the 180cm Mayfield will leave more breathing space either side; for a long dining-room or open-plan wall, the 200cm Claremont fills the space more convincingly.

Look and finish

Both have a rounded, pill-shaped silhouette, but the character is different. The Mayfield's reeded fronts and pale marble top give strong texture and contrast. The Claremont is calmer: three flat dark oak veneer doors that let the wood grain do the work, topped with a marble-effect ceramic surface in warmer brown and cream tones that tie in with the body. If you prefer clean, minimal fronts, the Claremont may suit; if you want ribbed texture as a feature, the Mayfield delivers that.

Materials

Both use real wood on the outside, but in different ways. The Mayfield combines mango wood, marble and metal, and is a heavy piece (98.8kg listed). The Claremont pairs a dark oak veneer body – a thin layer of real oak bonded to a stable core, which helps resist warping – with a ceramic top. Ceramic gives the look of marble but is non-porous, so it resists staining from wine, coffee and citrus and copes well with everyday heat and scratches. Natural marble is softer and more porous, so it typically needs sealing and quicker attention to spills.

Price

At the prices checked on 21 October 2026, the Claremont is £1,073 less than the Mayfield before delivery. Because they are different sizes and built from different materials, this is a price difference between two different sideboards rather than a like-for-like saving.

Which room suits which?

  • Choose the Claremont if you have a long wall (roughly 2.3m or more), want a large contemporary sideboard with oak grain and an easy-care top, and prefer a smooth, understated front.
  • Consider the Mayfield if your space suits a 180cm piece, you want mango wood and natural marble, and you like a textured, reeded front.

Measuring and delivery access

  • Wall space: allow at least 10–15cm either side of the 200cm width so the rounded ends have room to breathe.
  • Door clearance: leave enough space in front to open the doors fully and stand comfortably – around 80–90cm is a sensible guide.
  • Height: at 78cm, check it sits below window sills, radiator shelves or wall-mounted TVs where needed.
  • Access route: the Claremont arrives fully assembled, so measure every door, hallway, stair turn and lift on the way in. A 200cm x 40cm x 78cm piece needs a clear route, and tight stair turns are the most common problem.
  • Floor: stone-effect topped sideboards are heavy, so use felt pads on wooden floors and allow two people for handling.

Caring for your Claremont

  • Ceramic top: wipe with a soft cloth and warm, mildly soapy water, then dry. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals. Ceramic is hard-wearing, but its edges can chip if knocked, so take care with heavy objects near the edge and use coasters and mats as good practice.
  • Oak veneer body: dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and wipe spills straight away with a slightly damp cloth, following the direction of the grain, then dry. Avoid soaking the surface, silicone sprays and abrasive cleaners, and do not sand – the veneer is a thin layer of real oak.
  • Placement: keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to reduce fading, away from radiators and heat sources, and on a level floor so the doors stay aligned.
