5 Mattresses For Every Sleeper

Did you know that, on average, we spend an entire third of our lives asleep? If this isn’t enough of a reason to invest in that perfect mattress, we don’t know what is! In fact, the impact of a good mattress does not just extend to that third of our life that we’re in bed – a good mattress promotes proper spinal alignment and alleviates pressure on our joints that leads to aches and pains. Most importantly, the quality of your mattress is integral to the quality of your sleep, and we need a good kip if we want to improve our mental health, regulate our weight and promote a healthy immune system.

However, the most important thing to remember when mattress shopping is that there is no one size fits all – every customer has different needs and preferences, so we would strongly
recommend that you pay a visit to our store on Shields Road, Byker, to try out a few and chat to our knowledgeable staff before making a purchase. To get you started, though, here are 5 different mattresses to help all kinds of sleepers reach sweet dream status.

The Pocket Sprung

Pocket-sprung mattresses are ideal for sleepers who want that extra bit of support and pressure relief from their joints. Each pocket spring works individually to support your body, rather than the mattress moving as a whole unit. The more pocket springs there are, the better the mattress will support your body, and at Home Store Living we have a range running from 1000-6000 pocket sprung, so you can make a choice that fits your budget and needs. If you and your partner are different weights or you tend to toss and turn a lot, you may particularly benefit from this kind of mattress, as there is no motion transfer and you can enjoy consistent firmness.

The Foam

Rather than having pocket springs, this type of mattress has three different layers of foam. It offers a middle ground by being supportive and relieving pressure, while also retaining softness,
making them a great option for sleepers experiencing discomfort. If you tend to sleep on your side, this one might be for you, as foam mattresses conform well to the shape of the body. Stomach sleepers may want to opt for a very firm foam mattress to avoid any uncomfortable sinking. It’s worth noting that if you get too hot at night, foam mattresses don’t offer the same level of airflow as spring mattresses, meaning they can trap body heat.

The Open Coil

Also known as standard sprung, open coil mattresses are often more affordable options. They have interconnected springs topped with a comfort layer, which can be customised to your needs and preferences. Open coil mattresses are available in a range of firmness ratings, with a spring unit that spreads your body weight evenly and reduces pressure build-up. They’re
supportive and great at caring for your back, but the support is less personalised than a pocket-sprung mattress, so it’s worth weighing up whether your priority is affordability or suitability.

The Dual Purpose

There’s nothing worse than that feeling in summer when it’s simply too hot to sleep, but you also don’t want to be shivering in bed in winter either! However, a dual-purpose mattress might just solve all your temperature-related sleeping problems. With heat-storing fabric on one side and cooling gel pads on the other, you simply flip the mattress to suit the season. How nifty is that?!

All 5 types of mattresses are available here at Home Store Living, so practice some self-care and allow us to guide you towards a great night’s sleep.

5 Home Decor Ideas That Can Boost Your Happiness

Everyone wants their home to look gorgeous, but most of us don’t think about how our home looks can affect our mood. Here’s some surprising hacks for a happy home that leaves stress at the door.

Less mess = destress

Having loads of unnecessary clutter about the house can make you feel overwhelmed and unsettled. The obvious answer is to clean out any nicnacs you don’t need but, failing that, a good chest of drawers or a snazzy sideboard with lots of drawers and cupboard space can hide it all out of sight and out of mind.

“Tidy home, tidy mind.”

Everyone ever

Light it up

If a room is dark and dingy, it’s not going to put you in the best mood – it strains your eyes and makes you sleepy. Instead, flood your room with energising light! We love LEDs because they’re really bright and cost much less to run compared to normal ones, so you can have as many as you like.

“Darkness cannot survive in the presence of light.”

Eckhart Tolle (pretty smart bloke)

Mother (nature) knows best

Humans weren’t designed for indoors, but it’s safe to say we love it now – spending 80 to 90% of our time there. Having a little callback to nature in your room with a flowery pattern or a faux plant gives you that calm, fresh feel without the stress of trying to keep real ones alive.

“To me, flowers are happiness.”

Stefano Gabbana (the Gabbana in Dolce & Gabbana)

Feel-good fabrics

It’s not all about looks. You never think about it but how your home feels can have a huge impact on your mood. There’s nothing like the squidge of your toes in a deep fluffy rug, or the feel of buttery velvet under your fingertips. By adding lots of lovely texture to your home you can take it from just nice looking to a full on warm, cosy sanctuary.

“It’s so fluffy, I’m gonna die!”

Agnes, Despicable Me

Inhale essential oils (exhale stress)

It’s called aromatherapy for a reason. Bringing a fresh new fragrance into your home is a treat for your nose. They banish bad smells and bad vibes, helping you breathe clearer and fully unwind. It might sound like a luxury, but it doesn’t have to cost you. Just one diffuser can make all the difference. Now for the hard part, choosing your scent…

Smell the roses. Smell the coffee. Whatever it is that makes you happy.

4 Bedroom Ideas To Help You Sleep Better

Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you need to do with your day, but we all know it’s not always that easy.

According to one study, half of us aren’t getting the sleep we deserve and most of us ‘would try anything’ to improve our sleep quality.

So we thought we’d share 5 simple bedroom ideas we’ve picked up over the years that you can try, to help create a relaxing sleep environment that’ll actually help you drift off.

1. Mattress Matters

It might seem like the most obvious, but the effect your mattress is having on your sleep is criminally underestimated. Think about it; a flat saggy mattress you can feel the bed though, a rock hard slab or a lumpy spring-jabbing mess are not things that scream ‘sleep tight’.

But quality is just one point, it’s about finding the right one for you. You might have back or joint pain that needs memory-foam support, or you might be a back-sleeper that needs a firmer fit to keep your body aligned. Whatever it is, we’ll help you find it with our huge range. Live locally? Pop in for a test nap.

2. Lights Down Low

57% of us say too much light is stopping us from sleeping.

We say try not to turn on any big lights in your room at night. It’s startling, it forces your brain into daytime mode, and makes it much harder to get back to the land of nod.

Instead, go for a bedside lamp (or two) for a smaller, lower light if you need it. Here’s our pick:

3. Tidy Room, Tidy Mind

Tidying up is one of this year’s biggest trends thanks to queen of clean Marie Kondo, and it’s easy to understand why.

Your bedroom is your one retreat away from the stresses of the outside world, so keep anything that doesn’t bring you out-of-sight and out-of-mind.

Think about getting rid of anything you don’t actually need, and bringing in smarter storage that hides away distractions. Store essentials in a bedside table and take clothes from a cluttered chair to a chest or wardrobe. Here’s some of our current favs:

4. Diffuse the Situation

When it comes to help sleeping, most people don’t straight away think of smell as a factor. But it turns out that aromatherapy is an easy, affordable and super effective way to improve your sleep quality.

A scent diffuser can act as a soft light to help you sleep, and the handpicked essential fragrances help your body and mind relax, so you can drift off easier and for longer. Here’s our current best-sellers:

Should I Buy a New Bed?

Ah, 2020. New year, new me – right? While you’ve probably already failed your ‘less pizza, more gym’ resolution, getting a great night’s sleep isn’t something you can’t afford to give up on. Here’s a few bits on why bedtime is sooo important for us, and how a bed upgrade can help you be your most gorgeous, well-rested self.

How a new bed can change your life

Mental Health

Let’s be honest, getting a good night’s sleep probably won’t turn you into some kind of all-singing all-dancing, happy-go-lucky Julie Andrews figure. But, it should help stop those “someone woke up on the wrong side of bed” comments from people picking up on your cranky attitude. After all, a well-rested you is less likely to burst into tears over a glass of spilt milk.

Hygiene

Did you know you can lose as much as 500ml of body fluid and 400g of dead skin every night? That’s flippin gross. Lying amongst all of this old bacteria can make for a really uncomfortable sleep, and even nasty skin complaints and viruses.

Making a simple, low-cost change like swapping out your mattress for a new one is common sense as far as your hygiene is concerned, but don’t just buy anything. Make sure your new mattress does exactly what you need it to, by choosing one with the right support and features. If you’re not sure what this means for you, we’ve got nearly 20 years experience making and selling mattresses, so just let us know if you need help finding your perfect fit.

Sleep Quality

You’ll spend 1/3 of your life in bed, so naturally it’s going to wear out over time. From mattress springs erupting like a painful game of Pop-up-Pirate, to beds literally on their last legs, your body ends up not getting the support it needs.

One French clinical study found that people who slept in a new bed versus an old one said they had less disturbed and more refreshing sleep.

So, as hard as it can be, it might be time to put your old bed out to pasture. Don’t feel guilty, though, it had a good run.

Our Checklist

You might want to think about getting a new bed if

  • you’ve had it for 7+ years
  • it makes funny noises
  • it’s lumpy or it’s lost its shape
  • it’s just not big enough

If you’re ready for a new bed but just need a bit of inspiration, here’s a few of our favourites that are both gorgeous to sleep in and to look at:
